I put some rain guards on the Highlander. They were $40 on Amazon, so I figured “Why not?” I was pleasantly surprised at the quality.

I like the in-channel ones on my 6, but the Highlander’s pinch protection is a bit more finicky, and I didn’t want to risk fighting with that like I have on the Mazda.

Almost 8,000 miles on the Highlander at this point and zero complaints. Literally the only thing that seems cheap on it is the cover for the tether anchor for the car seats. They both broke off as soon as I touched them, but not a big deal.

I want to get a trailer hitch for it  soon. That’ll lead to our long range goal of getting a small camper. I want one the size of a pop-up but with hard sides. I’m in a Highlander owners group on Facebook and more people on there haul with their Highlanders than don’t, which makes me feel better about the 5,000 pound capacity. I expect my camper to weigh no more than 3,000. I also want to look into a brake controller.

Overall, we are happy with our purchase. The Highlander chugs among and performs parental car duties well and my 6 is behaving itself as well, which is good because it is paid off and I have no sane desire to get rid of it (but that doesn’t stop me from drooling over CX-9s and other random cars).

Like most Toyotas, Highlanders seem to last for ever. I still see a lot of the 1st gen ones roaming around, and the current ones are all over the place.

My wife really liked the CX9 we had as a rental last year. I enjoyed it, too. I probably should’ve considered one when I got the 4Runner.  I’m surprised it eluded me as a choice.

I was dead set on us getting a CX-9. We drove a 2019 Grand Touring before the Highlander . I fell in love with it and my wife hated it. So, there went that.

The CX-9 was amazing because it felt like driving my 6, which I love, but it had the space of an SUV.

My wife loved the handling/power compared to her V6 Grand Cherokee. She didn’t like the “long nose”, as she put it. Of course, my wife’s general thought on cars tends to be “is it comfortable” and “can I get it in green”. How we ended up with a blue Jeep is beyond me, although it does fit the comfortable category.

Those really have let themselves go. My mother bought her 2006 brand spankin new. She  still drives it into the heart of Chicago daily. It just wont die.

Do you smoke in your car in the rain? Isn’t that the only reason to have these? (that’s what I’ve always thought anyways....)

The main reason we have them is to leave the windows cracked a bit and not worry about rain. Every summer day here is 100° with a chance of a random pop-up thunderstorm.

What do you mean let themselves go?

Blew up in size and weight

2006 Highlander dimensions: 185 L x 72 W x 68 H

2019 Highlander dimensions: 193 L x 76 W x 68 H

2006 Highlander weight: 3,520 to 3,935 lbs

2019 Highlander weight: 4,134 to 4,508 lbs

I wouldn’t really say it “let itself go.” It became more and more of what people wanted. The RAV4 of nowadays is the size of that first gen Highlander.

That’s fine! I also am not a fan of the Rav4 balooning to that size either. I get why it happened though.
